Even if I knew that tomorrow the world would go to pieces, I would still plant my apple tree.
Martin Luther
Two thoughts spring from this quote for me:
- Unless the world is completely destroyed, that tree will continue to grow and bear witness to God’s commitment to bring rain in season. (Genesis 8:21-22) How many apple trees were planted across our nation by John Chapman (aka Johnnie Appleseed) who planted in faith and left the rest to God?
- No matter what another person or even the entire world decides, I can only control my actions, my responses. The tree is my gift of beauty and bounty for me and for others.
